OneWeb

OneWeb is a direct competitor to SpaceX Starlink project which consists of a very significant constellation of satellites orbiting earth and providing internet connectivity to some of the planet’s most remote areas.

The OneWeb network will be a much smaller constellation – 900 satellites compared to Starlink’s thousands.

US-based OneWeb faced bankruptcy until a controversial financial rescue package by the UK government and other private investors prevented its closure.

News of the UK government investment in OneWeb suggested that they believed they were investing in a GPS satellite navigation network until it was later clarified that the OneWeb constellation wasn’t suitable for GPS and that the satellites couldn’t be retro-modified for such purposes.

Since the financial rescue the company have now resumed operations and have sent more satellites into orbit.
