Virgin Orbit
Virgin Orbit have partnered with Newquay Airport to create the Cornwall Spaceport from where it will operate its horizontal launch business.
The Virgin Orbit model differs considerably from a vertical rocket launch. They will send up Boeing 747s with their Launcher One rocket attached to the underwing, which will then be launched horizontally when at a suitable height.
Virgin Orbit is part of Richard Branson’s Virgin Group. The company is based in UK and works closely with its US-counterpart.
The Virgin Orbit plans at Spaceport Cornwall have been funded partly by the UK Space Agency and also by Cornwall Council.
Recent news has suggested the Newquay Airport – where Virgin Orbit are to be based – is having financial difficulties as a result of the Covid19 crisis. Although the company have suggested they have other alternatives for their horizontal launch plans.
