Mars – also referred to as the red planet is the fourth planet from the Sun and is the second smallest in the solar system.

The planet’s atmosphere is not believed to be suitable for sustaining human life as its air is much thinner than that on earth and its atmosphere is also said to contain numerous other gases with its skies heavy with dust.

The Red Planet is around 228 million kilometres from the Sun and has a surface area of around 150 million km2.

SpaceX entrepreneur Elon Musk has plans to colonise Mars eventually with the first manned crew to arrive there by 2026.
