As the world remains in shock by the atrocities of Vladimir Putin, Russia is threatening to destroy the International Space Station

The ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine transfers to various other industries, including space research and exploration, which involves many joint projects between the US, EU, and Russian Federation. One of those projects is the International Space Station (ISS) which will be destroyed without Russian Roscosmos, claimed Dmitry Rogozin following the EU and the US sanctions.

What is the Situation?

Roscomos chief, Dmitry Rogozin, claims ISS was kept in orbit primarily because of the Russian expertise. Thus, he added that the recent space sanctions against Russia could make Russian experts let the station deorbit and fall in the US or Europe, causing an enormous catastrophe. Rogozin threatens with the risk of the 500-ton structure falling on India or China and asks the international community if they are willing to take a risk.

The station has been in orbit for 21 years, and it was planned to decommission in 2030. The crew consists of four NASA astronauts, two Russian astronauts, and one from European Space Agency. Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, NASA said that they would do everything in their power to keep things as they were until two weeks ago.

Musk Says SpaceX Can Save ISS

According to Elon Musk, his SpaceX Dragon should be able to replace the Russian part of the international station if Russia decides to end its involvement in 2030. He also said that SpaceX delivers high-speed internet to Ukraine via the Starlink constellation deployed through the successful rocket launch, following the request of Ukraine’s vice prime minister.
