South Korean technology giant Samsung seems to be making efforts to enter the global space industry. Reports from The Korea Economic Daily point out that Samsung has kicked off the research and development of its space plant.

Samsung Seems To Have Its Eyes On The Global Space Industry

The early stage of the development of what seems to be Samsung’s rocket launch site is already underway. According to reports, the technology giant has hired experts to fuel its entry into the space industry.

Now, the technology giant is in talks with Seoul National University’s Department of Aerospace Engineering towards actualising this newly found space goal.

With a rocket launch site, South Korea will be able to launch its various missions into space. Currently, the region relies on other well-developed space industries like the US for its launch efforts.

Park Hyeong-jun, a professor of aerospace engineering at Seoul National University, speaks on South Korea being behind in the space industry. He says, “South Korea is one of the few countries capable of transferring its manufacturing strengths from semiconductors and nuclear power to offshore plants into the space industry.”

Samsung’s newly found interest in the space industry can also be seen in the coming NASA Artemis II test flight. Samsung collaborated with the Korea Astronomy and Space Institute to develop secondary payloads for the K-Rad Cube.

This CubeSat will launch with the NASA Artemis II test flight mission. Samsung will test “its next-generation semiconductors under development in-house in the high-radiation environment of space’s high Earth orbit.”
