According to the new reports, Project Kuiper and L3Harris are to partner on developing new military communication solutions. These are the first steps in the satellite communication firm forging ties with the US defence sector.
Project Kuiper and L3Harris Will Work On A New Satellite Constellation For Military And Public Usage
The Project Kuiper constellation is already taking shape as the first 27 satellites in the constellation have been launched into space. This constellation will consist of 3200 low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites that will handle communication for both military and public usage.
Defence contractor L3Harris Technologies is looking to use this constellation to improve military communication. L3Harris is looking into this constellation as it features some essential elements that will help serve the US military’s needs.
Sam Mehta, L3Harris President of Communication Systems, says, “We can actually get in on the ground floor and help influence some of the requirements since they’re at the beginning of their launch cycle.” He adds, “This is the right time to be able to go and influence those requirements.”
Because this satellite constellation is still at its early launch stage, this partnership will be able to serve the military’s needs. L3Harris will now move to implement some changes to the Amazon Project Kuiper satellite constellation to ensure it meets certain requirements.
This partnership will bring the Amazon Project Kuiper satellite constellation into the military product field. With L3Harris technology upgrades, soldiers will be able to rely on the Amazon Project Kuiper satellite constellation for basic communications.
Amazon Project Kuiper Satellite Constellation Prepares For Military Application
L3Harris identifies an important part of the Project Kuiper satellite constellation that will play a vital role in this partnership. This part in question is Amazon’s AWS cloud infrastructure, which will provide not just communication but also advanced data processing and analysis.
Mehta quoted earlier says that this will give soldiers “the same security and resilience and encryption that they would if they were operating in a closed tactical network.” There is also a need to develop a secure encryption that will ensure that all communication via the Amazon Project Kuiper satellite constellation stays secure.
Speaking on security, Mehta says, “Kuiper has been very good at making sure that data stays protected, and that there’s sovereign control over that data.” To support this, L3Harris’ hybrid terminals that are currently in development will help further secure all military communications through satellites and commercial networks.
Kuiper Government Solutions (KGS) is peering deeper into military usage of their satellite constellation with this partnership. Soon, this partnership will start taking its full form and compete with other firms in the satellite military communication industry.
