NASA’s Climate Research Hub in NYC Loses Office Space
26th Apr 2025
Over the past few years, a branch of the Goddard Space Flight Centre in New York performed its work from offices under lease from NASA, but that is coming to an end. An email sent to the research centre’s employees on 24 April confirmed the official termination of the office lease, giving workers about a month to clear the premises.
Recent Adjustments In The US Space Industry Leave The Goddard Space Flight Centre Without An Office
Officially, the research centre’s office lease will end on 31 May, as a recent email to the firm’s employees points out. This office space is located at Columbia University and is the hub for some of the centre’s research work.
Makenzie Lystrup, the director of Goddard Space Flight Centre, has a few takes on this lease termination. According to Lystrup, the termination decision has close ties with the ongoing reviews by the US government into the region’s space industry.
As part of this review activity, we learn that the US government is looking into its active leases in a bid to cut operational costs. However, we can’t determine whether this new move is from the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) or NASA.
By terminating this lease, the space research centre will lose the location it has called home since 1961. However, the termination of the lease doesn’t mean that the research centre has lost support from NASA.
The Goddard Space Flight Centre Will Move Its Office To A Different Location
Despite this lease termination, the centre won’t be stopping its work in climate research. For now, the centre plans to arrange remote work agreements with its employees as a source for a new office.
To prevent this event from repeating itself in future, the research centre will source a permanent office for operations. From the new location, the research centre will stick to its mission, especially “the future of its modelling work and capabilities,” as Lystrup points out.
