From Earth To Orbit: How D-Orbit And Planetek Plan To Power The Space-AI Revolution

D-Orbit and Planetek, two companies working towards AI integrations in the space domain, have announced their conflation with D-Orbit acquiring 100% of Planetek shares. Their goal: to build greater capabilities in Earth Observation, logistics, geospatially, and mission software.

Luca Rossettini, D-Orbit’s CEO, said in a joint press release: “We have been working on this milestone, combining D-Orbit and Planetek, for a long time. By combining our strengths, we are not only expanding our technological reach but also reinforcing our commitment to making space more accessible and sustainable to improve life on Earth. Our shared values, centered on the idea of putting people first, are at the heart of this collaboration, ensuring that innovation is driven by a strong, people-centric culture that empowers talent and fosters long-term success.”

Joining Teams: D-Orbit’s & Planetek’s Plans For The Future

One significant theme from the merger has been cloud-based space applications and the funnelling of data via artificial intelligence. D-Orbit and Planetek’s collaboration has been a key focus for both companies over recent years. Over time, both organisations have conducted a range of innovative initiatives, culminating in a holistic partnership. In early April, D-Orbit and Planetek announced their strategic merger at an event held by the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy.

Part of the agreement is that D-Orbit secured 100% of Planetek’s shares. As a result, D-Orbit said Planetek’s shareholders would be consolidated and become part of D-Orbit. However, D-Orbit affirmed that Planetek’s organisational positioning would “remain unchanged to ensure business continuity.” As such, both organisations would retain their autonomy to conduct their strategies and operability.

Part of their joint mission is to fulfil their services for ranging sectors, including “government, security, commercial and environment… [and] the broader space community,” D-Orbit said.

AI & Blockchain: Previous Collaborations In The Space Sphere

D-Orbit and Planetek’s collaborative efforts have seen novel and innovative technology enter the space market. This includes their AI-eXpress mission: “an innovative technology leveraging artificial intelligence and blockchain technology to enhance satellite reactivity and enable low-latency analytics transmission,” D-Orbit said.

Through AI-eXpress, a satellite would use AI to obtain data and perform decisions without human intervention.

The other component of AI-eXpress is the use of the blockchain network. Data procured by satellites is highly sensitive, so security in this area needs to be upheld. Therefore, the data would be stored and shared securely, free from prying eyes via blockchain transmission.
