Going Green In Orbit: UK Space Firms Invited To Apply For Free Carbon Footprint Audit

Two UK space agencies, namely, the Satellite Applications Catapult and Space4Climate, are now partnering up with the Glasgow Caledonian University to offer a free carbon audit to UK space firms. Firms that wish to take the audit can now apply via this link and have professionals look into their carbon footprints.

A Free Carbon Audit Might Steer The UK Space Industry In A More Eco-Friendly Direction

In a recent LinkedIn post, the folks at Space Network were proud to announce this new initiative for space firms in the UK. The groundwork for this initiative lies in Dr Andrew Wilson’s research, which aims to look into the carbon footprint of the UK space industry.

This research is in the Residence Innovation Scheme project and its title is “Baselining the Carbon Footprint of the UK Space Sector”. The free carbon audit that finds its footing in the work of this research aims to give UK space firms insight into their individual carbon emission.

With such information, these firms might adjust their operations to reduce their overall carbon output. To make this audit more attractive to space firms across the UK, its organizers are willing to perform the audit at no cost to the firms that apply.

All data that will be collected during this audit will be anonymous, hence ensuring that the confidentiality of the firms participating remains intact. With the data in hand, the organizers of this initiative will be able to provide recommendations to the participating firms on how to reduce carbon emissions.

All space firms operating within the UK are invited to apply for this free carbon audit. The deadline for the applications is fast approaching, so interested firms will need to make haste while the offer lasts.

Why Is It Important For UK Space Firms To Know Their Carbon Emissions?

Over the coming years, we expect to see a significant rise in the number of space missions that the UK will roll out. This will be a result of the ongoing global space race, which is bringing countries like the US, China, and the UK into close competition.

Each competitor in this global space race aims to be a leader in their respective fields. So it is safe to expect more space launches, more development of space technology, and more firms joining the space industry with their unique visions.

While all this will collectively help boost the space industry in regions like the UK, it can also lead to an increase in carbon emissions. It is important that UK space firms know their individual carbon emission to shift their operations in a more eco-friendly direction.
The partnership between the Glasgow Caledonian University, Satellite Applications Catapult, and Space4Climate is allowing UK space firms to know their carbon emissions for free. This data will help the UK to manage its space industry’s carbon emissions while staying on track for the global space race.
