The first major release of observations from the Euclid Space Telescope is here, and researchers predict that many more discoveries like this will follow through. According to official information, this telescope has successfully captured 26 million galaxies in a bid to understand our universe.
Mapping Out Our Universe One Galaxy At A Time
Launched back in July 2023 the Euclid Space Telescope is already rolling out impressive data as it studies our universe. With pictures of over 26 million galaxies, the space telescope is on a roll helping researchers better understand our universe.
The first set of pictures that the telescope has sent back to Earth has helped researchers create a detailed catalogue of over 380,000 galaxies. This catalogue shows how each galaxy is different from the other and also shows an impressive phenomenon where some galaxies merge with others.

While observing these pictures, you can’t help but notice the presence of dark matter that surrounds each galaxy. Over the years, scientists have struggled to understand the nature of this dark matter and how it helps to shape our universe.
Data from the Euclid Space Telescope gives scientists the best shot at understanding the nature of dark matter. Already, scientists observing the pictures from the telescope are noticing strong gravitational lensing events.
This event reveals the warping of space-time and magnifies background galaxies as a bright arc around a closer galaxy. Scientists believe that the precise measurement of these bright arcs can reveal the amount of dark matter in the universe.
Scientists Express Confidence In The Euclid Space Telescope

Some scientists are already expressing their confidence in the work that the Euclid Space Telescope is doing out there in space. Prof Adam Amara, the UK Space Agency’s chief scientist while speaking on the telescope says that he is “convinced there’s groundbreaking science in there, and a lot of it.”
He also says that the science equipment is even beating expectations, shedding more light on our universe. Regarding dark matter seen in the pictures taken by the telescope, Stephen Serjeant, a professor of astronomy at the Open University, expresses confidence that Euclid will help to expand our knowledge of dark matter.
Over the coming years, the Euclid Space Telescope will continue to capture images of galaxies within our universe. The goal of the science equipment is to photograph over 1.5 billion galaxies over the next six years.
Prof Adam Amara quoted earlier is sure that “in six years’ time, there’ll be new categories of objects discovered by Euclid.” Through the coming years, we expect to see more galaxies added to the already existing catalogue of galaxies in our universe.
