Space Forge has received a historic licence from the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to launch ForgeStar-1, marking a major milestone for space-based manufacturing. The satellite, set for launch later this year, will be the UK’s first In-Space Advanced Manufacturing (ISAM) satellite, positioning both the company and Wales at the forefront of this innovative industry.
Enabling a Scalable Future for Space-Based Manufacturing
The approval paves the way for Space Forge’s first in-orbit demonstration mission, a crucial step toward developing a scalable, reusable, and returnable manufacturing platform. The company aims to leverage space’s unique environment (microgravity, vacuum, and extreme temperature differentials) to produce high-performance semiconductor materials that cannot be manufactured on Earth.
Groundbreaking Applications in Key Industries
Manufacturing in space presents game-changing possibilities for industries such as semiconductors, quantum computing, clean energy, and defence. Research indicates that in-orbit production could reduce CO2 emissions by up to 75% in high-value infrastructure, driving innovation in sustainability, security, and advanced technology.
Additionally, ForgeStar-1 will test the Pridwen heat shield, a novel re-entry system designed to facilitate satellites’ safe return and reuse, a crucial advancement for sustainable space technology.
Strengthening the UK’s Role in Space Innovation
The approval of ForgeStar-1 underscores the UK’s commitment to sovereign space capabilities and homegrown innovation. By supporting returnable and reusable space platforms, the UK is cementing its position as a leader in space technology and advanced manufacturing.
Joshua Western, CEO and Co-Founder of Space Forge, emphasized the significance of this milestone:
“This licence award is a key mission milestone, and we’re looking forward to demonstrating how our scalable, reusable manufacturing platform can drive progress and provide benefits for us on Earth.”
Looking Ahead: ForgeStar-1’s Mission Impact
The ForgeStar-1 mission will serve as a crucial validation of Space Forge’s innovative platform, demonstrating its ability to deliver high-value materials from space while advancing key technologies for the future of in-orbit manufacturing.
As Space Forge prepares for launch, the UK’s role in sustainable space technology and advanced manufacturing continues to strengthen, setting the stage for a transformative era in the space industry.
