AI Joins The Moon Hunt: How The World Welcomed The Start Of Ramadan 2025
3rd Mar 2025
The holy month of Ramadan 2025 has officially begun in various countries, with moon sightings and announcements shaping the global start dates. This year saw new technology used in the sighting process, while weather conditions posed challenges in some regions.
UAE Uses AI Drones to Confirm Ramadan Start
The United Arab Emirates declared Saturday, 1 March 2025, as the first day of Ramadan after confirming the sighting of the crescent moon on Friday evening. This year marked a significant step forward, as the UAE introduced AI-powered drones to assist with the moon sighting process. The International Astronomical Center also recorded the first image of the crescent moon from Abu Dhabi.
Australia Among First To Announce Ramadan
Australia was one of the earliest nations to confirm the start of the celebration following lunar observations. Grand Mufti Dr. Ibrahim Abu Mohamad, in collaboration with Islamic councils, announced Saturday as the first day of fasting. Taraweeh prayers took place on Friday night, marking the beginning of the holy month for Australian Muslims.
Some Nations Observe Ramadan From 2 March
Not all countries commenced Ramadan on the same day. Brunei, Malaysia, and the Philippines observe the first day of fasting on Sunday, 2 March, as the crescent moon was not sighted in these regions. Similarly, India and Morocco confirmed Sunday as the start date following unsuccessful moon sighting attempts.
Cloudy Skies Impact Saudi Arabia’s Sighting
In Saudi Arabia, cloud cover made moon sightings difficult, particularly in Sudair and Tumair, two key observation sites. Despite this, authorities confirmed that Ramadan began on 1 March. Several other Gulf nations, including Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Oman, also declared Saturday as the first day of fasting.
World Leaders Share Festive Greetings
Political leaders across the globe have extended their well-wishes for Ramadan. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese acknowledged the month as a time for reflection, compassion, and unity, sending warm greetings to Muslim communities worldwide.
With Ramadan now underway, millions of Muslims are engaging in fasting, prayers, and charitable acts, embracing the spiritual significance of the month.
