Adding further fuel to the fire, Half-Life voice actor Mike Shapiro, best known for voicing G-Man and Barney Calhoun, posted a cryptic New Year’s Eve message at the turn of 2025. His video hinted at unexpected surprises in the new year, signing off with “See you in the new year” and tagging both #Valve and #HalfLife. 

While this alone wouldn’t be enough to confirm anything, the timing of the post alongside the recent wave of leaks has many fans convinced an announcement is imminent.

Data Mining Uncovers More Hints

Beyond the HLX references, dataminers have uncovered even more interesting details. A new set of code was recently discovered in a Dota 2 update, hiding in a file named AI_baseNPC.fgd. The code includes references to machinery and alien blood which are two elements synonymous with the Half-Life universe. McVicker points out that this file isn’t actively used by Dota 2, leading many to believe it was mistakenly left in from another project.

Further analysis of Valve’s internal files has revealed game mechanics that align closely with the Half-Life series, including voxel-based deformation systems. These discoveries suggest that HLX isn’t just another tech demo but a full-fledged Half-Life game that could be pushing the boundaries of physical simulation in gaming.

Another promising sign is that Valve has reportedly started external playtesting for HLX. According to well-known leaker Gabe Follower, Valve has moved beyond internal tests and is now allowing employees from other teams to try the game. 

Of course, fans have been burned before. Over the years, rumors and leaks about Half-Life 3 have repeatedly surfaced, only for the project to fade into obscurity. However, the sheer number of consistent leaks, combined with credible sources vouching for the game’s progress, makes this round of speculation feel like it may be more credible.
