BlackSky and Rocket Lab Increase The Amount Of Gen-3 Satellites In Orbit

Taking to their official X page a few hours ago, BlackSky announced the establishment of the launch window for the coming satellite launch. This mission is tagged “Fasten Your Space Belts” and aims to add “very high-resolution 35-centimetre imaging capability to BlackSky’s high-cadence, low-latency data and AI-enabled analytics offerings.”

With this coming launch, BlackSky will be able to improve the capabilities of its already existing satellites. According to the firm’s CEO, Brian O’Toole, “This launch represents a major inflection point for our global defence and intelligence customer base.”

To fuel the completion of this project, BlackSky will turn to Rocket Lab for their Electron rocket. Speaking on the use of Electron, Sir Peter Beck, Rocket Lab founder and CEO says that the rocket is a “trusted and reliable constellation builder for companies like BlackSky.”

He adds that the use of the Electron rocket for this coming launch allows firms like BlackSky “to be in control of how, when, and where to deploy their constellation.” In the coming days, we will get to see this rocket in full operation as it takes the first BlackSky gen-3 satellite to space.

What You Need To Know About The BlackSky Gen-3 Satellite

The BlackSky Gen-3 satellite to launch this month is the first of its kind and will help improve the firm’s offerings to its customers. This satellite will launch this month following the opening of the launch window on 18 February 2025.

Rocket Lab’s launch complex in Mahia New Zealand will be the launch site for the gen-3 satellite. BlackSky points out that “the gen-3 constellation will offer customers new mission-critical insights with the addition of very high-resolution.”

To do this, the satellite will rely on the use of “rapid-revisit 35-centimetre imagery and AI-enabled analytics delivered at industry-leading speed and scale.” The capabilities of this new satellite will come in handy for BlackSky’s main clients, which will be intelligence and military firms around the world.

This coming launch scheduled to take place in a few days is the first of many more. Over the year, BlackSky plans to launch more gen-3 satellites, hence boosting the capabilities and flexibility of its products.
