A Moon halo is simply an optical illusion that causes a bright ring to appear around the lunar body caused by the refraction of light in the Earth’s upper atmosphere. On 5 February 2025 sky watchers in various UK regions like London, Plymouth, Somerset, and North Devon got to experience this phenomenon, documenting their encounter on the internet.

Sky Watchers Take To The Internet, Sharing Images Of The Moon Halo

A few hours ago, various skywatchers across England took to the internet to share various photos of the Moon halo. These images show the lunar body surrounded by an impressive halo ring and it is a marvel to behold.

As images kept flowing onto the internet showing off this impressive sight, more netizens stepped out to observe this sight. Jamie Reynolds, an X user and a nature photographer, took to his page to share some images of the Moon halo from his perspective.

From his tweet above, we see the Moon halo from his point of view, and it is a delight to behold. We can see a clearer image of this phenomenon in a similar post by another X user St Agnes Niki.

More residents of the UK who were able to see this occurrence also took to the internet to share images from their points of view. This was a sight to behold for those who were opportune to get a glimpse of this phenomenon in the night sky.

What Causes A Moon Halo

As stated in the first paragraph of this article, a Moon halo is caused by the refraction of light in the Earth’s upper atmosphere. Here, rays of light are dispersed through suspended ice crystals in cirrostratus clouds.

These clouds are located at an altitude of 6000 meters or, 12000 meters. The dispersion of light rays from the lunar body caused the halo that was visible to residents of various regions in England a few hours ago.

This halo is also visible around the sun during the day and is a result of the same dispersion of light from the sun in the Earth’s upper atmosphere. So if you get to see this halo around either the Moon or the Sun, be sure to enjoy the beautiful sight.
