Is Elon Musk Killing Tesla Sales in Britain? New Research Says Yes

According to new research conducted by the folks at Electrifying, Tesla might be losing its firm grip on the British EV market. In a survey the electric vehicle media firm conducted, we learn that the idea of purchasing a Tesla is off-putting for Brits as a result of Elon Musk’s controversial personality.

Elon Musk’s Reputation In Killing Tesla Sales In the British EV Market

Over the past few months, Elon Musk has been growing in popularity following his support for Donald Trump during the US presidential elections. While this might be a good thing for Elon Musk and his firms, his growing popularity isn’t giving Brits the right impression of his EV brand, Tesla.

In the research survey conducted by the folks at Electrifying, Elon Musk’s reputation was a dealbreaker for buyers shopping for a new EV. This sentiment was shared by about 61% of EV owners in the survey and 56% of potential EV buyers in the survey.

Speaking on this survey, the CEO of Electrifying says that while Tesla has been instrumental in driving EV adoption…….. Elon Musk’s brand appears to be polarizing.” He adds that “consumers now have more choice than ever, and it’s clear some are turning away from Tesla to explore other options.”

This implies that for some EV buyers in Britain, purchasing a Tesla was the popular choice to make, considering the lack of options. With the influx of Chinese EV models into the British EV market, Brits are now have a wider array of options to pick from.

Since there are more options to pick from, most Brits looking to purchase an EV can now look critically at Elon Musk’s reputation as a reason to not get a Tesla. Most of the buyers surveyed opted for other EV models from Chinese brands, as well as the competition from other regions.

Tesla Dwindling Sale Give Chinese EVs A Chance In The British EV Market

Chinese EVs are becoming more popular worldwide with brands like BYD, Nio, Xpeng, and Zeekr expanding their global presence. In 2023, BYD outsold Tesla in the global EV market to become the world’s largest EV manufacturer.

Ever since this achievement, the brand hasn’t let its guard down as it has been expanding its global presence. Other Chinese EV manufacturers like Nio, Xpeng, and Zeekr have also topped EV sales charts in various regions including their home market.

However, the success of these Chinese brands has been tied to various government subsidies that make them more affordable. Other regions like the European Union are currently imposing tariffs on Chinese EVs to make them as expensive as locally produced EVs.

This move by the European Union is in a bid to ‘level the competition between Chinese EVs and locally produced EVs,’ however, Britain isn’t following through with this measure. As a result of this, EV buyers in Britain can purchase Chinese EVs free from any expansive tariffs.
