Meet OpenAI Operator for Websites: The AI Assistant That Scrolls, Clicks, and Types for You
28th Jan 2025
On 23 January 2025, Sam Altman’s artificial intelligence firm took to its official website to announce the release of its OpenAI Operator tool. This tool which will be available for users of the OpenAI premium plan will help control actions on the browser without the need for the user’s physical presence.
OpenAI Operator Is Here To Help With Your Basic Browsing Activities
The announcement of this new tool from OpenAI shows yet another use of artificial intelligence. Subscribers to the ChatGPT Pro version will be able to access this tool, which Sam Altman’s team says is still in its “research preview” phase.

By giving the new OpenAI Operator, users will be able to rest while the AI tool performs tasks like “typing, clicking, and scrolling” on the browser. The possible target audience for this tool will be shoppers, students who partake in online classes, and remote workers.
According to OpenAI, this tool will help “people save time on everyday tasks while opening up new engagement opportunities for businesses.” The firm adds that this new tool will focus on handling browser repetitive tasks like “filling out forms, ordering groceries, and even creating memes.”
While this tool might have the best of intentions for its target audience, some might criticize its use. OpenAI says that this new tool will continue receiving upgrades as users drop feedback, hence enabling the team to improve its usage.
How To Access OpenAI Operator
Considering the ability of this new ChatGPT tool, lots of users around the world will want to try it out. However, since it is currently in its “research preview” phase, OpenAI is limiting its access to a few people.
For now, this new tool is only available to ChatGPT Pro plan subscribers. Additionally, the new OpenAI Operator tool will only be available to ChatGPT Pro users in the US.
By controlling access to this new tool, OpenAI will be able to better develop the tool before making it available to a wider audience. ChatGPT users in the US that are able to access this feature can “simply describe the task you’d like done and Operator can handle the rest.”
Users are also able to “take over control of the remote browser at any point” and also “personalize their workflows in the Operator by adding custom instructions.” These custom instructions can be saved for easy access in future, hence helping users better use this new tool.
