Top 10 Sci-Fi TV Shows Releasing (and Continuing) in 2025
22nd Jan 2025
Warning! This article may cause binge-watching.
In today’s streaming universe, there are always loads of shows in the pipeline. 2025 has a few brand-new shows as well as follow-up seasons (with varying levels of hype).
We’re exploring the new sci-fi TV shows coming to our screens soon, from the quirky and comedic to post-apocalyptic depravity, this year could be a memorable one…
The Last of Us Part 2
First on our list of upcoming sci-fi TV shows will be no surprise to anyone…
Following the ubiquitous success of its first season, The Last of Us returns with Part 2, delving deeper into the post-apocalyptic world ravaged by a fungal pandemic.
The series continues to follow Joel (cult hero Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) as they navigate new challenges and confront haunting pasts and potentially bleak futures. The chemistry between Pascal and Ramsey has been widely praised and fans are eager to see how their characters evolve in this next installment. We’ve delved into what season one got right (and wrong) here, and the hopes are high for season two.

We’re currently in that phase that mixes hype for the show with people relentlessly criticising the casting, as the teaser trailer for season 2 has been released.
The show’s commitment to character development and emotional storytelling sets it apart in the sci-fi genre and it has so far proven to be one of the few game adaptations to actually work (maybe Mario did break the curse).
Murderbot
Murderbot is one of the few shows on this list that is likely to be brand new to a lot of viewers, rather than being a rehashing or continuation.
Based on Martha Wells’ The Murderbot Diaries, this series introduces audiences to a self-aware security robot that has hacked its own governor module. This allows it to act independently.
Preferring to binge-watch soap operas and mess around rather than fulfill its security duties, Murderbot embarks on a journey of self-discovery and grapples with complex human interactions.
There’s likely to be plenty of humour, staying true to the tone of the beloved book series. Author Martha Wells explains her concept behind the series:
“The original idea that I started with in All Systems Red (Murderbot Diaries #1) was about an enslaved security person,” the author said to Tor.com, “and a sentient AI fit the best with what I wanted to do. I would hope for people to think about how the corporations in the story decide who gets to be human and who doesn’t, and how their society got to that point, and realise how that happens here in our world.”
With such heavy AI themes, Murderbot could be pretty on the nose, societally speaking. Whether they’ll pull off the rarity of creating a great sci-fi with a hefty dose of comedy.
Alien: Earth
Among the sci-fi TV shows people are talking about for 2025 is an Alien adaptation. In fact, it is the first time an Alien sequel or spin-off has been made for television, in spite of the franchise kicking off nearly 50 years ago.
Created and helmed by Noah Hawley (“Fargo,” “Legion”), this prequel series dives into the unsettling fusion of human ambition and alien horror.
Though the exact story has not been revealed, the heart of the tale is Wendy, a groundbreaking character who is a hybrid “meta-human,” combining an adult body with a child’s brain and consciousness. Her journey to master her new reality under the mentorship of Kirsh, a synth, and a human scientist forms a compelling narrative spine. Another central figure, Hermit, a medic working for a corporate military outfit, introduces a gritty human perspective to the unfolding chaos.
The cast is packed with talent, including Sydney Chandler, Alex Lawther, Essie Davis, and Timothy Olyphant. The involvement of Ridley Scott as an executive producer signals a commitment to maintaining the eerie aesthetic and tension that made the original films iconic.
With stunning cinematography by Dana Gonzales and production design led by Andy Nicholson, Alien: Earth may also deliver a visual experience as gripping as its narrative. Though trailers remain elusive, a brief teaser was included in Disney Plus’s 2025 preview.
Blade Runner 2099
Writer of the original story and science fiction pioneer Philip K. Dick actually passed away before the first Blade Runner movie, but his mesmerising and dark futuristic world continues to inspire.
Blade Runner 2099 is coming this year and is set fifty years after the events of Blade Runner 2049 (which means no Gosling in this series, presumably!) While specific plot details are under wraps, the series is expected to explore new facets of the dystopian world, delving into the complexities of artificial intelligence and the challenges of humanity (sounds like a trend developing for 2025 sci-fi shows).
We know Michelle Yeoh is in this show, and she is likely to be the biggest name among a cast that also includes Hunter Schafer and Dimitri Abold. This show will be available to watch on Amazon Prime Video some time in 2025.
Black Mirror season 7
People looking for sci-fi TV shows on Netflix are often drawn in by the dark series of tales we see in Black Mirror.
Charlie Brooker’s anthology series will return with its seventh season, continuing to explore the dark and often dystopian aspects of modern society and technology. Known for its standalone episodes that delve into thought-provoking scenarios and feel eerily close to the bone in some scenarios, the series has previously featured a star-studded cast, and Season 7 follows suit.
We will see the likes of Awkwafina, Rashida Jones, Chris O’Dowd and Paul Giamatti pop up throughout the season, though details of which episodes are unclear. Director Brooker did give us a few tidbits (but none that will shock fans):
“We’ve got six episodes this time, and two of them are basically feature-length. Some of them are deeply unpleasant, some are quite funny, and some are emotional,” he said.
You can hear Brooker talking in more detail about season 7 here:
The Handmaid’s Tale season 6
The dystopian world of Gilead returns in the sixth season of The Handmaid’s Tale.
Elisabeth Moss reprises her role as June Osborne, continuing her fight against the oppressive regime. The previous seasons have been lauded for powerful performances and timely social commentary. As the narrative progresses, viewers can expect intense drama and a deeper exploration of the characters’ resilience and resistance.
The show’s ability to mirror real-world issues has kept it relevant and compelling throughout its run even though there has been a long wait for season 6, which will prove to be the conclusion of the story. The Handmaid’s Tale has taken on its own life and a new direction since originally beginning as an adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s book.
“It definitely has final-season energy,” Elisabeth Moss explained about the finale of the show. “[It] goes to many different places, and it is very, very surprising all the way through.”
The Handmaid’s Tale will begin streaming in April 2025.
Star Wars: Andor season 2
Star Wars: Andor has been one of the relatively well-received aspects of the huge Star Wars reboot. In 2025, it returns with its second season, chronicling the adventures of Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) prior to the events of Rogue One. The series delves into the early days of the Rebellion against the Empire, offering a gritty and grounded perspective of the Star Wars universe.
There’s something nice about the directors in a Star Wars production having more time for rich storytelling and character development, Season 2 is poised to further explore the complexities of rebellion and sacrifice.
The show has expanded the massive Star Wars lore while maintaining the essence of the original saga has resonated with both new and longtime fans in a similar way to The Mandalorian, the show that helped project a certain Pedro Pascal to superstardom.
Stranger Things season 5
The town of Hawkins faces new supernatural threats in the fifth season of Stranger Things.
This could be referred to as an ensemble cast, but many of the stars in it were made by the show. We see the likes of Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, and Winona Ryder return to unravel the mysteries of the Upside Down. Known for its oozing ’80s nostalgia and thrilling plotlines, the series has captivated audiences worldwide.
As the characters mature, the stakes are higher, and the challenges more daunting.
We know that the show has wrapped filming and Finn Wolfhard, who plays Mike Wheeler on the show, revealed the detail in an interview with People. “We’re almost done shooting,” Wolfhard explained. “It’s going great, and it has been unbelievable. It’s been very special. I mean, being able to just be with everyone knowing it is the last season has been really great, but it’s pretty surreal.”
When the Stars Gossip
A show that has already got people talking in 2025 is When the Stars Gossip. It has some mixed reviews by those that have spent time watching it on Netflix, and has caused controversy with the way it represents the doctor on board, but plenty of foreign audiences have started to pay attention to the show.
The show is quirky by nature – it is a romantic comedy set aboard a space station. iMDB explains the premise as “An astronaut and a tourist cross paths and find themselves entangled in an unexpected romance.”
We see elements of heavy and heartfelt story blended with some humour and a dose of romance (nothing too nauseating). When the Stars Gossip looks like it could help in furthering the impact of Korean television shows and movies around the world.
And For Marvel Fans…
Marvel has its very own place in the television world, and there seems to be a constant production line…
Kicking things off in January is Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, an animated series revisiting Peter Parker’s early days as a hero. Its nostalgic art style promises to capture the charm of classic comics and is something a little different from recent versions.
Daredevil: Born Again arrives on Disney+ in March with Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio reprising their iconic roles. Set five years after the Netflix series, it follows Matt Murdock, Foggy, and Karen as they rebuild their lives and their law firm in a city rife with danger.
Later in the year, Ironheart introduces Riri Williams, a young inventor with a knack for creating high-tech armor. The show will spotlight her journey into the Marvel universe as she crafts her identity as a hero.
Also in the works is Vision Quest, with Paul Bettany reprising his role as Vision. This series promises an introspective look at Vision’s quest for identity and purpose, further exploring his evolution after WandaVision. We may see it in 2025.
Hopefully, these aren’t all of the best sci-fi TV shows 2025 has to offer. We may well get some surprise hits and new announcements in the world of science fiction television!
