Joe Biden Approves Order To Build Gigawatt-Scale Artificial Intelligence Data Center
16th Jan 2025
On Tuesday, January 14, Joe Biden, the President of the United States of America, signed an executive order to develop a gigawatt-scale Artificial Intelligence data centre. This centre will be on a site leased from the US Defence and Energy departments and will help power the nation’s AI needs for some time.
Meeting America’s AI Energy Needs With Gigawatt-Scale Data Centres
Over the past few years, AI (Artificial Intelligence) has seen a boost in its usage from one industry to another. This growth has been fuelled by the endless opportunities that AI technologies offer to businesses and firms globally.
To meet the growing need for this technology, there is a need for adequate power to fuel its needs. For this reason, the outgoing President of the United States Joe Biden has signed an executive order to build gigawatt-scale Artificial Intelligence data centres to meet the energy needs of AI in the US.
The sites leased by the US Defence and Energy departments for this need will help to generate over 5 gigawatts of energy necessary for the training of various AI models. According to President Joe Biden, this will help to “accelerate the speed at which we build the next generation of Artificial Intelligence infrastructure here in America, in a way that enhances economic competitiveness, national security, Artificial Intelligence safety, and clean energy.”
With access to this much power, the US can develop its own AI technology on its home soil without foreign interference. Tarun Chhabra, the White House technology, emphasized the importance of this project by saying that it will “ensure that the AI industry can build out the infrastructure for training and using powerful Artificial Intelligence models here in the United States.”
The Global Artificial Intelligence Race
A few days ago, we reported on the UK’s move to invest heavily in the Artificial Intelligence industry. This move was to help the region become more relevant in the AI industry, hence attracting more investors.
Now the US is making a similar move to help them become more independent in their development of AI technology. This new move will help the US to independently train its AI models with power generated from its region without any international interference.
This will not only boost the US’ Artificial Intelligence initiatives but also help improve regional security. According to Tarun Chhabra, this move will ensure that the most powerful AI models continue to be trained and stored securely here in the United States.”
