U.S. Navy Grants X-Bow $60 Million for Solid Rocket Production Modernisation

In a bid to modernise its defence manufacturing infrastructure, the U.S. Navy has awarded X-Bow Systems $60 million to upgrade solid rocket motor production facilities. This significant contract will support improvements at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Indian Head Division in Maryland, a historic site critical to defence operations since World War II.

The project, which incorporates advanced 3D printing technology, is part of the Navy’s expansive $2.7 billion plan to overhaul its industrial base over the next 15 years. The upgrades aim to meet the growing demand for solid rocket motors used in space launch vehicles, missiles, and other military applications.

Indian Head – A Pillar of U.S. Defence Manufacturing

The Naval Surface Warfare Center Indian Head Division in Maryland has long been a vital hub for producing propulsion systems and energetic materials. Its legacy stretches back to World War II, supporting U.S. military readiness through cutting-edge manufacturing.

With this contract, X-Bow Systems will employ its advanced 3D printing technologies to increase production capacity for solid rocket motors and propellants. These improvements are essential as the military faces growing demands for advanced weaponry and aerospace systems.

Jason Hundley, X-Bow’s CEO, emphasised the project’s importance: “Our work will increase production capacity of solid rocket motors to meet growing military needs.”

Building on Past Success

This new contract continues X-Bow’s growing portfolio of defence work. Recently, the company was selected to develop propulsion systems for hypersonic missiles and to contribute to the Standard Missile programme.

In addition to these achievements, X-Bow in 2023 entered into a 20-year partnership with the Naval Surface Warfare Center Indian Head Division. This long-term collaboration focuses on the development and production of advanced solid propellant rocket systems, further solidifying their role in modernising defence technology.
