Storm Bert has caused “devastating” floods in South Wales, with heavy rain and strong winds continuing to affect the UK. Over 100 flood warnings will now be in effect across the UK on Monday.

Disastrous Effects Of Storm Bert

Because of the storm, hundreds of homes were flooded and without power during the weekend. The roads became rivers, and winds reaching 82mph were recorded in parts of the UK.

In South Wales, where a local council has declared a major incident, some areas have received more than 100mm of rain. Meanwhile, two regions in the southeast are under severe flood warnings, with authorities highlighting a “significant risk to life.”

After hours of heavy rain from Storm Bert, residents in Dundonald, Northern Ireland, were trapped in their homes by floodwaters on Saturday.

Flights and train services have been delayed or cancelled due to the severe weather. As The Guardian reported, at least five people have died in England and Wales since the storm struck.

“In Yate last night, large amounts of flood water affected about 100 properties – and residents were evacuated from their homes by emergency services,” wrote @BBCBristol on X.

Residents also shared videos of the flood on social media.

Storm Bert

Storm Bert formed through explosive cyclogenesis, rapidly intensifying into a strong low-pressure system. Meteorologist Scott Duncan shared a video showing the storm merging with a broad low-pressure gyre, creating a vast wind field. This process caused severe weather, including heavy rain and strong winds. This led to widespread flooding and disruption across the UK, affecting communities and infrastructure.

Weather Challenges Are Not Over

The Met Office’s rain warnings expired at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday. However, strong winds persist, and rain from higher ground is expected to flow into rivers, which could disrupt travel and complicate clean-up efforts.

A yellow wind warning will be in effect on Monday for parts of Scotland, with strong winds expected. In addition, hundreds of flood alerts remain across England, Wales, and Scotland, signaling ongoing risks of flooding. In London, all Royal Parks, including Hyde Park and its Winter Wonderland attraction, were closed on Sunday due to strong winds. The parks’ management announced that there would be delayed reopenings on Monday after a safety inspection.

The heaviest rainfall is shifting eastward into England, affecting areas like the Midlands and South West, where flooding has already occurred.

Forecast For The Coming Days

Also, the Met Office states that Storm Bert will clear from the far northeast of the UK by early Tuesday.
Many are expecting quieter weather next week, but the southern UK may face further rain and strong winds on Tuesday night and Wednesday.
