Ukraine Signs Agreement With ICEYE For Space Reconnaissance
13th Nov 2024Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence has signed an agreement with ICEYE company to provide them with high-precision imaging of the surface of the earth. This will help a great deal with the imaging of the Earth’s surface.
Ukrainian Defence Minister Rustem Umierov explained the benefits of the contract: “Thanks to this contract, our military will have access to high-precision satellite imagery with full coverage of the combat zone.”
Umeirov also said that their command will be able to set out the priority areas for their surveillance and they will have control over what updates they will get from the satellite system.
“By introducing advanced space reconnaissance technologies, we are creating a technological advantage that increases combat capability and protects our military,” he added.
ICEYE specialises in Synthetic Aperture Radar technology. These are satellites that have radars using aperture synthesis. This means that they have the capability to provide accurate images of the Earth’s surface no matter what the weather and time of day. Conditions such as smoke do not prevent the radars from working. Items can be identifiable at any point during the day on the Earth’s surface.
ICEYE has been working with Ukraine closely in recent years. In August 2022 ICEYE announced a contract with the Serhiy Prytula Charity Foundation to provide the Government with similar SAR satellite imaging capabilities. ICEYE also gives the forces in Ukraine access to its constellation of SAR satellites, so they can receive radar satellite imagery on critical locations. In July, the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine signed a Memorandum of Cooperation that outlined further partnership throughout the duration of the war.
