Starship With LG Batteries: SpaceX Asks For Help Due to Increased Launches and Future Mars Flights

SpaceX is set to power its next-generation Starship rocket with LG Energy Solution’s advanced battery technology. This partnership marks SpaceX’s first long-term battery contract with an external supplier, a strategic move to support the ambitious demands of Starship’s reusable design, the Korea Economic Daily reports.

LG’s cylindrical lithium-ion batteries will provide primary, backup, and storage power essential for the rocket’s performance.

Why LG’s Batteries Matter for Starship

Previously, SpaceX primarily relied on in-house batteries for its spacecraft. However, as Starship evolves into a highly reusable, airline-like rocket that can refuel and relaunch after each mission, SpaceX turned to LG’s high-safety, long-lifespan batteries.

These batteries will allow Starship to achieve the frequency and reliability that Mars and lunar missions require. Neither SpaceX, nor LG Energy Solution have revealed any more details about the deal to any publication.

According to IE, SpaceX has turned to the Korean firm as the number of launches is going to increase, and it is also looking at battery options that can function for longer.

It is important to note that LG had previously supplied some batteries to SpaceX, but those were under one-off deals.

LG Energy’s Role in Expanding Space Exploration

With an eye on the space industry as a new growth sector, LG Energy has been developing specialized batteries for space applications.

In 2023, it supplied NASA with spacesuit batteries, and it plans to deliver batteries for NASA’s lunar electric rover by 2025.

LG’s partnership with SpaceX not only strengthens its presence in space technology but also aligns with its work with Tesla, potentially positioning it for future opportunities, such as powering humanoid robots.

Implications for Future Space Missions

As LG Energy Solution supplies Starship, this collaboration could influence space power solutions, promoting a more sustainable and reusable approach. The use of reliable, high-capacity batteries paves the way for long-duration missions, enabling future human habitats on Mars or the Moon.

As Starship prepares for its next phase, LG’s batteries will be a key factor in achieving sustainable and reusable spacecraft that can redefine the future of human space exploration.
