Skyrora and Viasat Mark UK First with InRange Telemetry Ground Test Revolutionizing UK Space Launch
31st Oct 2024
On 31st October, Skyrora, in collaboration with Viasat and CGI, successfully conducted a ground test of InRange, a telemetry relay system designed for space-based launch vehicles. The test of Skyrora’s InRange system is an important first for the UK commercial space industry.
Skyrora Completes First InRange Telemetry Test with Viasat and CGI
Viasat’s InRange ensures a continuous flow of telemetry data during flight, from launch to payload deployment. Unlike traditional ground stations that can only connect when the launch vehicle is within sight, InRange utilizes geostationary satellites for uninterrupted data transmission between the launch vehicle and the control centre.
As Volodymyr Levykin, CEO and Founder of Skyrora, said, this collaboration between Skyrora, Viasat, and CGI reduces reliance on ground station communications and enhances flexibility in selecting launch locations.
“The InRange telemetry system reduces the likelihood of challenges around recording and transmitting the readings of launch vehicles,” mentioned Levykin. “As well as saving launch companies millions of pounds, it will offer them more flexibility in launch location and improve their visibility of telemetry data throughout the flight, from launch to payload deployment.”
Successful Ground Test For Viasat’s InRange System
The static ground test generated usable telemetry data and successfully demonstrated InRange’s connectivity using Viasat’s global L-band satellite communication network with Skyrora’s launch vehicle system.
“We’re excited to share this successful test as another step towards bringing Viasat’s InRange capability to a growing launch industry. Accurate vehicle telemetry is a critical part of any launch, and InRange is built to provide this valuable data in real time and with greater flexibility and reliability than before,” shared Gary Lay, Vice President of Viasat’s Strategic Programmes.
The First Phase Of The ESA Contract Completed
“We’re proud to be working with great partners to support the UK with its evolving launch capabilities and are looking forward to moving ahead to the next phase of the program,” concluded Lay.
