Elysium

Directed by Neill Blomkamp, Elysium shows a view of the future that reflects today’s social problems. Based on amazing special effects and deep themes, this thrilling movie combines exciting action with important political messages.

In the year 2154, the world is starkly divided. While the wealthy live in luxury aboard a pristine space station called Elysium, the rest of humanity struggles in poverty on an overpopulated, decaying Earth. Matt Damon stars as Max, a factory worker who becomes terminally ill after a workplace accident. With no access to the advanced medical technology available on Elysium, Max sets out on a desperate mission to infiltrate the space station and restore balance between the two worlds.

Elysium was released on 9th August 2013 and is now available to stream on Netflix this October.

CTRL

CTRL (Netflix Film) depicts influencers Nella and Joe, who seem to be a perfect couple. But when Nella discovers Joe has been unfaithful, she turns to an AI app to help erase him from her life.

However, things turn dark as the app starts taking control of more than she expected…

This exciting movie of the genre thriller is expected to be released on 4th October 2024.

The Man Who Loved UFOs


The Man Who Loved UFOs (Netflix Film) is set in late 1980s Argentina and follows a reporter’s search for proof of alien activity. When journalist José de Zer and his cameraman Chango struggle to find any solid evidence of UFO sightings in Córdoba, they decide to make their own. Their story of burnt pastures quickly becomes a media sensation!

The film premiered at the 72nd San Sebastián International Film Festival in September 2024 and will stream on Netflix on 18th October 2024.

The Manhattan Alien Abduction


The Manhattan Alien Abduction (Netflix Documentary) tells the story of a woman who says she was taken from her bedroom in Manhattan by aliens. This docuseries investigates whether her claim was a clever trick or real evidence of alien life. It also dives into one of the biggest mysteries in ufology, which still sparks debates online.

What makes this documentary special is that a filmmaker was right there during the alleged abduction and captured everything on camera. With hundreds of hours of unseen footage, this is like a real-life version of The X-Files, Netflix Media Center promises.

Gundam: Requiem For Vengeance

This Japanese English-language web anime series follows Iria Sorari, a pilot from the Principality of Zeon in the “Red Wolves” division. Events unfold during the final stages of the One-Year War. Iria’s mission is to defend the European front against the Earth Federation’s attempts to reclaim the area. Eleven months into the war in U.C. 0079, Captain Solari, a top Zaku II pilot, faces off against the Earth Federation’s deadly new weapon: the mobile suit Gundam.

The series will be released on 17th October.

Sci-Fi Movie Premiers in October 2024

The Substance

This satirical body horror centres on Elizabeth Sparkle, a 50-year-old Academy Award-winning actress and aerobics TV show host, fired on her birthday by her producer, Harvey, for being “too old.” Distracted by a poster of herself being removed, she gets into a car accident. In the hospital, a nurse gives her a flash drive for a serum called The Substance, which claims to create a younger and more beautiful version of the user. However, she soon discovers that this desperate decision comes with terrible side effects.

The Substance was chosen to compete for the Palme d’Or at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, where it premiered on 19th May 2024. The film hit theatres in the US, UK, Latin America, Germany, Canada, and the Netherlands on 20th September, making it a great pick for viewing this October.

The Wild Robot

The Wild Robot is an animated sci-fi survival film inspired by Peter Brown’s captivating book series. When Roz, a survival robot, washes ashore on a deserted island after a fierce storm, she initially terrifies the local wildlife. However, her journey takes an unexpected turn as she learns to communicate with the animals around her.

Everything changes when she discovers a fragile gosling, Brightbill, hatching from a crushed egg that she has valiantly protected. As she embraces her role as his caretaker, Roz must navigate the dangers of the wild and confront menacing robots sent by her creators. With each challenge, she grows closer to Brightbill, but when her existence is threatened and her memories erased, Roz must summon the strength of her newfound love to reclaim her identity. She embarks on a journey filled with peril and sacrifice.

The Wild Robot premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on 8th September and made its theatrical debut in the United States on 27th September.

Venom: The Last Dance

Venom: The Last Dance is an American superhero film featuring the Marvel Comics character Venom. It is a sequel to Venom (2018) and Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021).

According to IMDb, in this instalment, Eddie and Venom find themselves on the run, hunted by both their worlds. As the net tightens around them, they face a heart-wrenching decision that could mark the end of their journey together.

Sony Pictures Releasing has scheduled the film for theatrical release on 25th October 2024. It will be available in IMAX and other premium large formats (PLFs).

Sci-fi Movies Streaming On Other Platforms

Star Trek Lower Decks: Season 5

This animated comedy series follows the support crew aboard one of Starfleet’s least prestigious vessels, the U.S.S. Cerritos, set in 2380. Ensigns Mariner (Tawny Newsome), Boimler (Jack Quaid), Rutherford (Eugene Cordero), and Tendi (Noël Wells) navigate their responsibilities while juggling their social lives, often amidst a chaotic backdrop of sci-fi anomalies and adventures.

Star Trek: Lower Decks returns for its fifth and final season, premiering on Paramount+ on 24 October 2024.

Solar Opposites

The animated series Solar Opposites follows a team of four aliens who escape their exploding home planet, only to crash-land in a fully furnished suburban American home. The group is divided in their opinions about Earth: Korvo and Yumyulack are critical of the pollution, consumerism, and human flaws, while Terry and Jesse embrace the planet’s culture, reveling in its TV, junk food, and entertainment. Their main mission? To protect the Pupa, a living supercomputer destined to evolve, consume them, and terraform the Earth.

According to Hulu.com, this fifth season, streaming starting 12th August 2024, promises more intergalactic humour and wild adventures!

Solar System From BBC

In the Solar System mini-series, produced for PBS and the BBC, the renowned physicist aims to unveil the “truly extraordinary” happenings occurring daily on the planets and moons within our solar system.

The first episode, “Volcano Worlds,” features Cox exploring volcanic activity on other planets, particularly focusing on Venus. Numerous volcanoes exist there, and new evidence suggests they may be more active than previously believed.

All five hour-long Solar System episodes can now be streamed on BBC iPlayer in the UK (a valid TV Licence is required).

The episodes will also air weekly on BBC Two, with broadcasts on Monday nights at 9 PM UK time, beginning on 7 October.

Last Days Of The Space Age

Last Days of the Space Age is an Australian drama series set in 1979 that follows three families in Perth, Western Australia. Central to the story is Tilly, who dreams of becoming an astronaut despite discouragement from her career counsellor. Their lives dramatically turn when the American space station Skylab crashes near the city, coinciding with Perth’s preparations for the Miss Universe 1979 pageant. The series examines how history is perceived through a contemporary lens, blending traditional settings with modern themes.

Last Days of the Space Age premiered on 2 October on Disney+.
