Scottish Astronomer Launches “Instagram for the Skies”: How To Download The App

Entrepreneur and amateur astrophotographer Tom McCrorie, based in Kilmarnock, has launched a new image-sharing platform designed specifically for astronomers and astrophotographers. Picastro, a mobile image-sharing platform, aims to become the “Instagram” of astrophotographers passionate about space.

Tom McCrorie has merged his enthusiasm for astrophotography with his work as a creative designer. After securing initial startup funding from Interface, he obtained a significant six-figure investment from a Middle Eastern investor interested in astronomical observatories. Tom is also now in discussions with additional potential investors from across the globe.

Who Is The Audience For Picastro?

McCrorie hopes to gain more than 500,000 subscribers in the first year. The enterpreneur believes the platform could reach tens of millions of users worldwide. This audience consists of three types of members: early users with smartphone cameras, individuals using entry-level smart telescopes, and seasoned astrophotographers.

“Picastro provides a dedicated platform that redefines how space enthusiasts engage with the cosmos, comments Scottish Space Network on LinkedIn. “Whether capturing breathtaking images of deep-sky objects or sharing stunning night-sky photographs, Picastro creates an unparalleled, secure and dynamic environment for users at every level of experience from beginner to professional.”

You can find and download Picastro from your preferred app store. For Android users, visit the Google Play Store, where the app is readily available. If you’re an iPhone user, you can download it from the Apple App Store. Members pay a yearly subscription fee to access high-quality images and connect with other users on the platform.

Only Space Content

Unlike other social media, Picastro focuses only on space-related content. It gives users a place to connect with others who share their passion, show off their astrophotography, and learn from experts around the world.

“Having extensively tested the platform with the community, Picastro combines everything that is good about the well-known social platforms but is tailored for those with an interest in astronomy and astrophotography and a range of skill levels,” shared McCrorie.

With strong image protection, users can share their work without worrying about it being stolen. This ensures that their creativity is both appreciated and safe, the creators team assures.

No Compressed Images

One of Picastro’s standout features is its no-compression policy for image uploads. Astrophotographers often invest countless hours capturing intricate details of celestial objects, making the ability to share high-resolution images crucial. Picastro ensures that every detail is preserved by not compressing images and diminishing their quality.

Faster Finding Saved Objects

Also, Picastro makes it easier and more intuitive to find saved objects. The platform allows users to save astronomical objects by type, streamlining the process of locating them in their feeds.

“Social media has changed the world in terms of sharing information and allowing communities to come together, but there is a lot not to be liked, such as the constant bombardment of advertising and what the platforms think you’ll like. Picastro has been created very much for the community, and will be curated by its members,” promises Tom.
