NASA Reveals Photo Of The Blue Supermoon Near The “Rocket City”
22nd Aug 2024On Thursday, 22nd August, NASA’s Image of the Day published a brilliant photo of the August blue supermoon rising over Huntsville, Alabama, which is home to NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center and the U.S. Space and Rocket Center.
The image showcases the Sturgeon Moon behind a replica Saturn V rocket. It was taken by Michael DeMocker, photographer, videographer, and NASA drone pilot, on Monday, 19th August.
“Over 99% full when it rose, the moon was a rare combination of a blue moon and a supermoon, a phenomenon that will not repeat until 2027,” NASA commented in a post.
Why “Blue Super Moon”?
When the Moon comes closest to Earth, it appears larger and brighter in the night sky, creating a supermoon. This is the most striking full Moon of the year. Although it’s not blue, the third full Moon in a season with four full Moons is known as a “Blue Moon.”
Huntsville “Rocket City”
Huntsville is called “Rocket City” because of its close ties to the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center. This facility manages vital propulsion systems, engineering technologies, and launch vehicles. It is also outstanding for having supported Apollo, Shuttle, and Artemis programs.
We recently published a collection of blue supermoon photos. Check it out to see more impressive images from amateur astrophotographers in the UK and worldwide.
