Sturgeon Blue Supermoon: See The Best Photos Of The Rare August Event
20th Aug 2024On 19th August, we saw the Sturgeon Moon, a full moon that appeared unusually large in the sky. This phenomenon is called a supermoon, and it happens because the moon’s orbit is slightly oval-shaped, bringing it closer to Earth at certain points. This year, the Sturgeon Moon coincided with one of these close points, making it look bigger — a well-known optical illusion.
The August Sturgeon Moon is also a Blue Moon. This rare event occurs when there are two full moons in a single calendar month or the third of four full moons in a season. The Sturgeon Moon being a Blue Moon makes it even more special, as such occurrences happen only every two to three years.
