The OT Collection of Aurora Photos from the Geomagnetic Storm
12th May 2024
Currently, Earth is getting a bit of a breather between CMEs from sunspot AR 3634. There’s a monster on the way, and if the weekend’s results thus far are any indicator, there will be plenty to see if it is night on your side of the planet when it hits. If aurora photos are your thing, get ready!
Photographers all over have been busy, and we asked some of the shooters from our Best Astrophotos of the Week series to let us post some samples of their aurora photos from the weekend.
Swiss/German amateur astrophotographer Berengar von Ow sent us this:

Bill Dutton, in New Mexico, USA, wrote that ‘the clouds didn’t play fair’ at first, but apparently, apologised by posing for this photo.

@TheFigen_ has posted a photograph of Aurora above the Dutch windmills by photographer Albert Dros on X.

X (former Twitter) user Emma (@EmBow1986) shared with us a captivating photo capturing the magic of the Northern Lights illuminating the skies above Liverpool, UK.

The absolutely amazing image of northern lights over Pikes Peak from Garden of the Gods was made by @robhoffimagery. “Didn’t think this one was possible,” he commented on X.

Natasha Woods from Pevensey Marshes has shared some aurora images with the caption: “I was gonna edit these slightly, but honestly, I don’t think I need to; that was magical”.

“The colours were spectacular tonight. These are the most intense auroras I have seen despite my many trips to Nunavik and Nunavut,” Christo Forand has shared on Facebook. “Inconceivable for me to have such colours so far south.”

Siddharth Upadhya has taken great images with his phone: “Blazing display of the Arora Borealis as seen from the skies of Amersham, UK. Pics were taken with iPhone 14 Pro Max and Nikon 20mm lens”:

“What an incredible showing. Looking south east over Brechin golf clubhouse,” One Man & His Nikon has shared on his Facebook
