Court ruled in favour of Sutherland Spaceport using crofting land
The Scottish Land Court ruled against the claims that Spaceport Sutherland was negatively impacting farm and pasture land in the Melness Crofters’ Estate (MCE). The claims were brought to the court’s attention by landowner Anders Holch Povlsen and his wife, billionaires, who argued that the neighbouring lands would be negatively impacted should the Sutherland Spaceport be built.
After a quick examination, the court dismissed the claims and ruled in favour of a change in land that granted the spaceport rights to function while making sure that neighbouring crofters and landowners would be allowed to use the surrounding fields for their agricultural or livestock needs.
The Prime Minister and MP exchange cheeky jokes following the court decision
Following the ruling, the MP offered an invitation to the Prime Minister to witness the first satellite launch from Spaceport Sutherland. The Prime Minister expressed his enthusiasm for the event, going as far as to joke that with the passion that the MP had, he’d most likely make “a suitable cargo to send on a space mission.”
The remark was taken in good jest. According to the MP, he is delighted that the Prime Minister shares his enthusiasm for the Spaceport Sutherland.
The court ruling marks a historic event for the Melness Crofters’ Estate. The Spaceport Sutherland will create exciting new job opportunities and bring a much-needed revival into the community. The voluntary committee of local crofters who own the land seems to favour Sutherland Spaceport, coming forward to say that the facility will bring a good change for the UK Space Agency.
