Elecnor Deimos Will Participate in ESA’s Comet Interceptor Mission Due 20286th Jun 2021
Elecnor Deimos has been chosen by Thales Alenia Space in the UK to develop a crucial component for the upcoming Comet Interceptor Mission. The mission, introduced by ESA in 2019, will take place in 2028. This is going to be the first mission ever to send a probe to a comet as it enters our inner solar system.
About ESA’s Comet Interceptor Mission
The mission concept originates from the University College London, UK. In 2019, the European space agency handpicked this mission for its Cosmic Vision Programme. The goal of the initiative is to study the comets by using breakthrough technology.
As the comet enters our inner solar system, two probes will be sent to study it. The first one, B1, will be provided by the Japanese Space Agency JAXA. The second one, B2, will be designed by ESA. Both probes will travel as payloads on a mothercraft and will be equipped with scientific tools from major research institutions.
Elecnor Deimos Role in the Comet Mission
Elecnor Deimos will be responsible for creating the most functional design for the second probe B2. As one of the leading innovative companies in Europe, Elecnor Deimos should offer the most effective design solution in terms of manufacturing costs, performance, and reliability. Elecnor will have to consider scientific, mechanical, thermal, and other parameters that would result in smooth communication between the spacecraft and the ground station.
Thales Alenia Space, a company that picked Elecnor Deimos in a competitive tender, will be responsible for the entire spacecraft design. It will also assist the European Space Agency with the Comet Interceptor Mission Phase 2 preparation stage.
Elecnor Deimos has already commented on this initiative, stating the entire team is proud to be a part of this project and is determined to contribute its share to the Comet Interceptor Mission success.
